The Typical 9-Day Northern Circuit Route Itinerary offers the most complete and scenic way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. As the newest and longest route on the mountain, the Northern Circuit covers approximately 98 kilometers and circles the quiet northern slopes before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. This extended itinerary provides exceptional acclimatization, fewer crowds, and one of the highest summit success rates on Kilimanjaro, often reaching 95-98%.
The journey begins at Londorossi Gate on the western side of the mountain and crosses a remarkable range of landscapes, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and high-altitude wilderness. Unlike popular routes such as Machame or Marangu, the Northern Circuit spends several days on the remote northern side of Kilimanjaro, where trekkers enjoy open trails, panoramic views of Kenya, and uninterrupted mountain scenery.
The 9-day itinerary is designed to maximize acclimatization by following the “climb high, sleep low” principle. Extra days on the mountain allow the body to adapt gradually to altitude, increasing comfort and improving the chance of reaching the summit successfully.
At WeWild Travel, our experienced local guides, quality camping equipment, nutritious meals, safety systems, and personalized service help create a memorable and successful climb from start to summit.

The 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is an excellent choice for trekkers who want more time to acclimatize, quieter trails, spectacular scenery, and a high chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. Unlike shorter Kilimanjaro routes, the Northern Circuit takes a longer path around the mountain, giving your body more time to adjust to altitude while you explore Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes.
The best time to climb the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is from June to October and January to February, when Kilimanjaro generally has drier weather, clearer skies, and better trekking conditions. June to October is the most popular period, while January and February offer another excellent climbing window with good visibility and fewer crowds. The longer Northern Circuit itinerary can also be climbed during the shoulder months, but trekkers should expect a greater chance of rain and cloud.

Today, you’ll arrive in Tanzania and begin your exciting journey toward climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our friendly WeWild Travel team will welcome you and transfer you to Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha, where you will spend your first night before the trek.
The drive from the airport to Arusha takes approximately 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Along the way, you can enjoy your first views of the Tanzanian landscape and begin to experience the warm hospitality of the country.
After arriving at Mount Meru Hotel, check in and take time to relax after your flight. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy the hotel’s facilities, have a meal, or simply rest and recover before your climb.
Later in the evening, you will meet your experienced mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing. Your guide will explain the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route itinerary, discuss altitude acclimatization and mountain safety, check your trekking equipment, and answer any questions before the expedition begins.
This briefing is also the right time to identify any missing equipment and make final preparations. Get a good night’s rest, stay hydrated, and prepare for your first trekking day tomorrow.
Today marks the first trekking day of your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route. After breakfast in Arusha, you will drive toward Londorossi Gate, the western entrance to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing park registration and meeting the mountain crew, your trek begins through the beautiful montane rainforest.
The trail winds beneath tall trees with lush vegetation, fresh mountain air, and the possibility of spotting birds and other forest wildlife. This first hiking day is intentionally moderate, allowing your body to begin adjusting to the increasing altitude without rushing the ascent.
As you continue through the forest, the trail gradually climbs toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first overnight stop on Kilimanjaro. Once you arrive, the mountain crew will have your camp prepared, allowing you to relax, enjoy a warm meal, and take in your first evening on the mountain.
Your guide will monitor how you are feeling and remind you about the importance of drinking enough water, walking slowly, and communicating any symptoms of altitude discomfort. A good night’s rest prepares you for the longer journey toward the Shira Plateau tomorrow.
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Starting Elevation: Londorossi Gate – approximately 2,100 m
Camp Elevation: Mti Mkubwa Camp – approximately 2,780 m
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Montane rainforest
Today, your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route continues from Mti Mkubwa Camp toward the spectacular Shira Plateau. After breakfast, you leave the rainforest behind and follow the trail into the heath and moorland zone of Mount Kilimanjaro.
The vegetation gradually changes as you gain altitude. Tall rainforest trees give way to shorter shrubs, grasses, and open volcanic landscapes. On a clear day, you may enjoy impressive views toward Kibo Peak, the highest cone of Kilimanjaro.
The trail gradually climbs across the western side of the mountain before reaching Shira 1 Camp, where you will spend the night. This section introduces you to higher-altitude conditions, so your guide will encourage a slow, steady pace and regular hydration.
After arriving at camp, you can relax, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, and take in the wide-open scenery of the Shira Plateau. Your mountain crew will prepare the campsite while you rest and allow your body to continue adapting to the altitude.
Distance: Approximately 8-10 km
Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
Starting Elevation: Mti Mkubwa Camp – approximately 2,780 m
Camp Elevation: Shira 1 Camp – approximately 3,850 m
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Today is a shorter and more relaxed day on your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route, designed to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude. After breakfast at Shira 1 Camp, you begin a gradual trek across the beautiful Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp.
The trail crosses open high-altitude terrain with wide views of the surrounding landscape. As you walk, Kibo Peak rises prominently ahead, giving you a clear view of the summit you will attempt later in the trek.
Although the distance is relatively short, your guide will maintain a slow pace to support acclimatization. Take time to enjoy the scenery, drink plenty of water, and listen to your body throughout the walk.
After reaching Shira 2 Camp, you can settle into camp and enjoy a freshly prepared lunch or hot drink. The afternoon gives you valuable time to rest and recover before the route continues toward Moir Camp.
This gradual approach is one of the advantages of the Northern Circuit Route, allowing you to spend more time at altitude rather than rushing toward the summit.
Distance: Approximately 7 km
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Starting Elevation: Shira 1 Camp – approximately 3,505 m
Camp Elevation: Shira 2 Camp – approximately 3,850 m
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Heath and moorland
Today, your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route leaves the Shira Plateau and continues toward Moir Hut, one of the more remote camps on Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you begin trekking across the high-altitude landscape, with the trail gradually becoming more rocky and rugged as you approach the northern side of the mountain.
The route offers impressive views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding alpine terrain. You will notice a major change in vegetation as you move farther from the moorland and deeper into the alpine desert zone.
Your guide will keep a steady, comfortable pace to help your body adapt to the increasing altitude. The journey toward Moir Hut also provides another valuable acclimatization opportunity before you continue around the northern slopes.
After reaching Moir Hut, you can rest at camp, enjoy a warm meal prepared by your mountain crew, and take in the peaceful surroundings. Because you are now at a higher elevation, staying hydrated and getting enough rest are important.
Distance: Approximately 11 km
Trekking Time: 5- 7 hours
Starting Elevation: Shira 2 Camp – approximately 3,850 m
Moir Hut Elevation: Approximately 4,200 m
Accommodation: Moir Hut Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Alpine desert
Today, the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route continues from Moir Hut toward Buffalo Camp, taking you deeper into the remote northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you leave Moir Hut and follow a rugged trail through the alpine desert, with Kibo Peak remaining a striking presence throughout the day.
The route includes gradual climbs and descents as you traverse the northern side of the mountain. Along the way, you can enjoy expansive views across the Kenyan plains and the surrounding Kilimanjaro landscape. This quieter section is one of the highlights of the Northern Circuit, with fewer trekkers compared with the more popular southern routes.
Your guide will maintain a steady “pole pole” (slowly, slowly) pace to help you manage the altitude. Take regular breaks, drink water, and enjoy the changing scenery rather than rushing toward camp.
After several hours on the trail, you arrive at Buffalo Camp, where your mountain crew will have your campsite ready. Enjoy a freshly prepared meal, relax, and take in the remote mountain surroundings before the next stage of your journey.
Today, the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route continues from Buffalo Camp toward Rongai Third Cave Camp, taking you farther around the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you leave Buffalo Camp and follow the trail through the open alpine landscape.
The route gradually moves toward the eastern side of the mountain, where you can experience the quiet and remote character of the Northern Circuit. The landscape remains rugged and dry, with impressive views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding plains when weather conditions are clear.
Your guide will maintain a comfortable pole pole pace, allowing you to conserve energy and continue adapting to the altitude. Although you are getting closer to the summit, the itinerary avoids rushing, giving you time to rest and enjoy the mountain.
After reaching Rongai Third Cave Camp, you will have time to relax, enjoy a freshly prepared meal, and recover from the day’s trek. Your guide will also check how you are feeling and prepare you for the increasingly important summit preparation days ahead.
Today is an important stage of your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route as you leave Third Cave Camp and climb toward School Hut, the final overnight camp before your summit attempt. After breakfast, you begin a steady ascent across Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude alpine desert.
The trail gradually becomes more rocky and barren as you approach the upper slopes of Kibo. With the summit now much closer, your guide will set a slow and consistent pace to help you conserve energy and adjust to the increasing altitude.
As you approach School Hut, you will have impressive views of Kibo’s upper slopes and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Once you arrive at camp, the focus shifts to summit preparation. Your guide will give you a detailed briefing about the early-morning climb, including the route, expected conditions, pacing, clothing, hydration, and safety procedures.
Enjoy an early dinner and prepare your summit equipment before getting as much rest as possible. Tomorrow is the biggest day of your Kilimanjaro adventure, when you will climb toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.
Today is the summit day of your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route and the most challenging part of your Kilimanjaro adventure. You will leave School Hut in the early hours and begin your ascent toward Uhuru Peak, 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
The climb starts in darkness, with your guide setting a slow and steady pace. As you gain altitude, the air becomes thinner and the terrain more demanding. You will continue carefully toward the crater rim, taking regular breaks to manage your energy and stay hydrated.
After reaching the crater rim, you continue toward Uhuru Peak. When you reach the summit, take time to celebrate your achievement, enjoy the incredible views when conditions are clear, and capture memorable photographs with your mountain crew.
After the summit, you begin the long descent. You will return toward the lower slopes before continuing to Millennium Camp, where the warmer air and lower elevation provide a welcome change after the summit.
At Millennium Camp, enjoy a well-earned meal, relax, and celebrate reaching the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro. Your guide and crew will continue to monitor you after the demanding summit day and make sure you are comfortable.
Distance: Approximately 15-17 km
Trekking Time: 10-14 hours
School Hut Elevation: Approximately 4,750 m
Uhuru Peak Elevation: 5,895 m
Millennium Camp Elevation: Approximately 3,820 m
Accommodation: Millennium Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Arctic zone, alpine desert, and rainforest
Today marks the final trekking day of your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route. After breakfast at Millennium Camp, you begin your descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate, where your Kilimanjaro adventure officially comes to an end.
The trail descends steadily from the high mountain environment into thicker, greener forest. After the demanding summit day, the lower elevation makes breathing easier, although your legs may still feel tired. Take your time, walk carefully, and enjoy the final views of the forest.
As you approach Mweka Gate, you will notice the landscape becoming warmer and more tropical. Once you reach the gate, your guide will complete the park exit procedures, and you can receive your Kilimanjaro summit certificate as a reward for reaching Uhuru Peak.
Your WeWild Travel vehicle will then meet you and transfer you back to Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha, where you can enjoy a hot shower, relax, and celebrate your successful climb.
Note: If your itinerary specifically includes Millennium Camp – Mweka Camp – Mweka Gate, that would require an additional trekking day. For a true 9-day itinerary, Millennium Camp – Mweka Gate is the appropriate final descent.
After completing your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route, today is your departure day. Enjoy your final breakfast in Tanzania before checking out of your hotel.
Depending on your flight schedule, you can spend some time relaxing, shopping for souvenirs, or exploring Arusha before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
Your WeWild Travel driver will collect you from your hotel and transfer you to the airport in time for your flight. As you leave Tanzania, take home unforgettable memories of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, exploring Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes, and completing one of Africa’s most spectacular trekking adventures.
Thank you for choosing WeWild Travel for your Kilimanjaro experience. We hope to welcome you back to Tanzania for another adventure.
