Overview
The 6-Day Marangu Route is a hut-based Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary that gives trekkers an extra acclimatization day at Horombo Hut before the summit attempt. It approaches Mount Kilimanjaro from the southeastern side and follows a direct trail to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. Because the route uses mountain huts instead of tents, it is a popular choice for climbers who prefer a simpler and more comfortable trekking experience.
Unlike the 5-day Marangu itinerary, the 6-day option includes an additional day at Horombo Hut. During this day, you can take an acclimatization hike to a higher elevation before returning to the hut to sleep. Therefore, your body gets more time to adjust to the thinner air before you continue to Kibo Hut and prepare for summit night.
The journey begins at Marangu Gate and climbs through Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest to Mandara Hut. From there, the trail enters the open moorland and continues to Horombo Hut, where views of Mawenzi and Kibo become more dramatic. Next, you cross the high-altitude Saddle to Kibo Hut before starting your midnight climb toward Gilman’s Point and Uhuru Peak.
Although the Marangu Route has a well-established trail, climbing Kilimanjaro still requires physical preparation and determination. In particular, summit night involves a long and demanding ascent at high altitude. However, our experienced local mountain guides maintain a slow pace, monitor your condition, and support you throughout the climb.
At WeWild Travel, we recommend the 6-Day Marangu Route for first-time Kilimanjaro climbers, trekkers who prefer hut accommodation, and anyone who wants more acclimatization time than the shorter 5-day option. If you want a classic Kilimanjaro route with a clear itinerary and professional local support, this six-day climb offers a strong way to begin your journey to the Roof of Africa.

In addition, you sleep in mountain huts instead of tents and trek through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the summit zone. Therefore, the route suits first-time Kilimanjaro climbers who want a structured climb with professional local guide support.
With WeWild Travel, you’ll climb at a steady pace while our mountain team supports you from Marangu Gate to Uhuru Peak.

Best Time to Climb the 6-Day Marangu Route
The best time to climb the 6-Day Marangu Route is from January to early March and from June to October. These periods usually offer drier trekking conditions, better mountain views, and more comfortable trails for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
From January to early March, climbers often enjoy warmer conditions and good visibility. In addition, the trail can feel quieter than during the busiest months. Therefore, this period suits trekkers who want a calmer mountain experience.
From June to October, dry weather makes the Marangu Route especially popular. The trails are generally less muddy, while clear conditions can offer impressive views of Mawenzi and Kibo. However, July, August, and September often attract more climbers.
You can climb Kilimanjaro throughout the year. However, April, May, and November usually bring more rainfall. As a result, the rainforest trail between Marangu Gate and Mandara Hut may become wetter and muddier.
For the 6-Day Marangu Route, we recommend choosing a suitable climbing season and booking early during popular months. At WeWild Travel, our local team can help you choose a departure date based on your preferred trekking conditions and travel plans.

The trail climbs steadily toward Mandara Hut at 2,700 metres. Therefore, your guide will maintain a slow and comfortable pace as you gain elevation. After 4 to 5 hours of hiking, you’ll reach the hut, enjoy a warm meal, and settle in for your first night on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Today, you’ll trek from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut, leaving Kilimanjaro’s rainforest and climbing into the open moorland zone. After breakfast, you’ll begin a steady ascent as the dense forest gradually gives way to smaller plants, giant heathers, and wider mountain views.
As you climb higher, the trail becomes more open and the air feels cooler. On a clear day, you’ll enjoy impressive views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo, giving you your first real look at Kilimanjaro’s higher slopes. Meanwhile, your guide will maintain a slow, steady pace as your body adjusts to the increasing altitude.
After 5 to 7 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Horombo Hut at 3,720 metres. Here, you’ll enjoy a warm meal, rest, and prepare for the important acclimatization day ahead.
Distance: 12 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Day 4: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Today, you’ll spend an extra day at Horombo Hut to help your body adjust to the higher altitude before continuing toward Kibo Hut. This acclimatization day is one of the main advantages of choosing the 6-Day Marangu Route instead of the shorter 5-day itinerary.
After breakfast, your guide may lead you on an acclimatization hike toward Zebra Rocks, a distinctive rock formation above Horombo Hut. The hike takes you to a higher elevation before you descend back to the hut. Therefore, your body experiences thinner air while you still sleep at a lower altitude.
After returning to Horombo Hut, you’ll have time to eat, hydrate, and rest. Your guide will also check how you are responding to the altitude before the climb continues toward Kibo Hut.
Hiking Time: 2-4 hours
Activity: Acclimatization hike and rest
Habitat: Moorland / Alpine Zone
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Day 5: Trekking from Horombo Hut (3,720m) to Kibo Hut (4,703m)
Today, you’ll trek from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut, crossing the high-altitude Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. After breakfast, you’ll leave the moorland behind and climb gradually into Kilimanjaro’s dry alpine desert.
As you continue higher, vegetation becomes scarce and the landscape turns rocky and open. The wide Saddle offers dramatic views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo when the weather is clear. However, the thinner air can make the steady climb feel more demanding. Therefore, your guide will maintain a slow pace to help you conserve energy.
After 5 to 7 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Kibo Hut at 4,703 metres. Here, you’ll eat an early meal, prepare your warm clothing and summit gear, and attend a final briefing with your guide. Afterwards, you’ll rest for a few hours before starting the summit climb around midnight.

Day 6: Ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descent to Horombo Hut (3,720m)
Today, you’ll climb from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, before descending to Horombo Hut. Your summit attempt begins around midnight after a short rest and final preparation at Kibo Hut.
Under the night sky, you’ll follow a steep trail toward Gilman’s Point at 5,685 metres on Kilimanjaro’s crater rim. The cold temperatures and high altitude make this the most demanding stage of the 6-Day Marangu Route. Therefore, your guide will set a slow, steady pace and monitor your condition throughout the ascent.
After reaching Gilman’s Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. On arrival, you’ll celebrate your achievement and take summit photos at the Roof of Africa. Then, you’ll begin the long descent to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal.
Finally, you’ll continue downhill to Horombo Hut, where you’ll enjoy dinner and a well-earned overnight rest after summit day.
