Deals of The Year: Join a trekking group Adventure 2025! Up to 15% OFF
The 5-Day Marangu Route is one of the shortest itineraries for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, taking trekkers from Marangu Gate to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters before descending through the same trail. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only major Kilimanjaro route that provides overnight accommodation in mountain huts rather than tents. Trekkers stay at Mandara Hut, Horombo Hut, and Kibo Hut during the climb.
The 5-day itinerary is designed for travelers with limited time who want to experience Kilimanjaro using the classic Marangu trail. However, the shorter schedule leaves less time for acclimatization than the 6-Day Marangu Route. This makes the climb more demanding at high altitude, especially during the summit attempt from Kibo Hut.
The journey passes through several of Kilimanjaro’s ecological zones, beginning in the lush rainforest before continuing through moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone. On summit day, you climb from Kibo Hut toward Gilman’s Point and continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.
The 5-Day Marangu Route can be a good option for experienced or well-prepared trekkers with limited time, but travelers who can add one extra day should consider the 6-day itinerary for better acclimatization.
The 5-Day Marangu Route is a classic Kilimanjaro trail known for its mountain huts, gradual approach, and direct path to Uhuru Peak.
The 5-Day Marangu Route itinerary includes five trekking days on Mount Kilimanjaro, using mountain huts and following the same trail for ascent and descent.
| Day | Itinerary |
|---|---|
| Arrival Day | Arrive in Tanzania and transfer to your Moshi hotel |
| Day 1 | Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut |
| Day 2 | Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut |
| Day 3 | Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut |
| Day 4 | Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut |
| Day 5 | Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate to Moshi |
The 5-Day Marangu Route is a good choice for trekkers who want to climb Kilimanjaro in less time while enjoying hut accommodation and a classic trail.
The best time to climb the 5-Day Marangu Route is during the dry seasons from January to March and June to October. These months generally offer clearer skies, less rainfall, and better trail conditions for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro.
From January to March, the route is often quieter, making it a good choice for trekkers who prefer fewer crowds. Meanwhile, June to October offers more stable weather and excellent mountain views, although the trail can be busier during the peak climbing season.
The Marangu Route can be climbed throughout the year. However, April, May, and November usually receive more rainfall, which can make the lower rainforest trails wet and muddy. Because the 5-day itinerary has limited time for acclimatization, choosing suitable weather conditions and preparing well can make your climb more comfortable.

Today marks the beginning of your Kilimanjaro Marangu Route adventure. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your WeWild Travel representative and transferred to your hotel in Moshi. The journey introduces you to Tanzania’s natural beauty, with views of local villages, open landscapes, and Mount Meru on clear days.
After check-in, you will have time to rest and recover from your international flight. This day is not physically demanding, but it plays an important role in preparing your body and mind for the climb ahead. Depending on your arrival time, your guide may meet you for a short briefing covering the route, safety guidelines, and equipment check.
The rest of the day is free for relaxation. You can organize your trekking gear, hydrate properly, and mentally prepare for the start of your Kilimanjaro journey.
This is your arrival and preparation day, so proper rest is very important before starting the climb. Long international flights can leave the body tired and dehydrated, therefore you should drink enough water and avoid unnecessary physical activity. In addition, take time to organize and double-check your trekking equipment to ensure everything is ready for the mountain. A good night’s sleep will help your body recover and prepare for the adventure ahead.
Today, your 5-Day Marangu Route adventure begins at Marangu Gate. After completing park registration and meeting your mountain crew, you’ll start trekking through the lush rainforest toward Mandara Hut.
The trail climbs gradually through tall trees and dense vegetation. Keep an eye out for colorful birds and black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the forest canopy. Your guide will set a comfortable pace, allowing you to enjoy the surroundings without rushing.
After about 4-5 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Mandara Hut, where you’ll spend your first night on Mount Kilimanjaro. If weather and time allow, you can take a short walk to Maundi Crater for beautiful views across northern Tanzania and toward Kenya.
Today, you’ll leave Mandara Hut and continue through Kilimanjaro’s open moorland zone toward Horombo Hut. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind, with tall trees giving way to giant heathers, open vegetation, and wider mountain views.
As you gain elevation, you’ll have views of Mawenzi Peak and Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of Mount Kilimanjaro. You may also see giant lobelias and groundsels growing along the trail, adding to the unique landscape of the upper mountain.
After around 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach Horombo Hut, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night. Since you are gaining significant elevation today, maintain a slow and steady pace, drink water regularly, and follow your guide’s advice.
Today, you’ll leave Horombo Hut and continue toward Kibo Hut, your final overnight stop before the summit attempt. The trail passes through the upper moorland before gradually entering Kilimanjaro’s dry and rocky alpine desert.
As you climb higher, you’ll cross the wide Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. This open landscape offers impressive views of both volcanic peaks as you make your way toward Kibo Hut. The altitude becomes more noticeable here, so your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace while you conserve energy for the summit.
After about 5-6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Kibo Hut. After an early dinner, you’ll prepare your warm clothing, headlamp, water, and other summit gear before getting some rest. You’ll wake during the night for the final ascent toward Uhuru Peak.
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your 5-Day Marangu Route. You’ll begin your summit attempt from Kibo Hut around midnight, climbing through the darkness toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim.
The trail becomes steep and rocky as you ascend toward Gilman’s Point (5,685m). After reaching the crater rim, you’ll continue around Kibo’s crater toward Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. At the summit, you’ll have time to celebrate your achievement and take photos before beginning the descent.
From Uhuru Peak, you’ll descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments. You’ll then continue down to Horombo Hut, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night. Although the descent is easier than the ascent, it is a long day, so conserve your energy and follow your guide’s pace.
Today, you’ll descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, completing your 5-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro climb. After breakfast, you’ll follow the trail through the moorland before entering Kilimanjaro’s lush rainforest.
As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the landscape turns greener. You’ll pass Mandara Hut and continue through the forest, where you may spot colorful birds and colobus monkeys among the trees.
After about 5–7 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Marangu Gate and complete your Kilimanjaro trek. You’ll sign out of the national park and receive your summit certificate if you reached the qualifying summit point. Afterwards, our driver will transfer you to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for a well-earned rest.
Today marks the end of your 5-Day Marangu Route Kilimanjaro adventure. After breakfast at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha, you’ll have time to relax before your scheduled airport transfer.
At the arranged time, our driver will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight. You’ll leave Tanzania with unforgettable memories of Mount Kilimanjaro and the achievement of reaching Africa’s highest mountain.
