The 8-Day Northern Circuit Route is Kilimanjaro’s longest main trekking itinerary, giving climbers more time for gradual altitude adjustment while exploring the mountain’s remote northern slopes. The route reaches Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres and suits trekkers who prefer a longer, quieter climb with a carefully paced itinerary.
The journey begins on Kilimanjaro’s western side and crosses the Shira Plateau before turning north around Kibo. Unlike routes that approach the summit through busier southern trails, the Northern Circuit leads you through less-travelled sections of the mountain. As a result, you can enjoy quieter camps, wide landscapes, and views toward northern Tanzania and Kenya in clear weather.
During the 8-day climb, you’ll trek through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone. More importantly, the longer itinerary allows a gradual ascent and includes valuable acclimatization opportunities before summit night.
For climbers who value more time on the mountain, remote scenery, and a slower trekking pace, the 8-Day Northern Circuit Route is a strong choice. With WeWild Travel’s local mountain team, you’ll follow a carefully planned journey from the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak and back to the park gate.

The 8-Day Northern Circuit Route is an excellent choice for climbers seeking a quieter, more scenic, and well-paced journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. As the longest route on the mountain, it provides additional time for acclimatization, allowing trekkers to ascend gradually and enjoy a more comfortable climbing experience.
One of the biggest advantages of this route is its remote northern trails. Unlike the busier southern routes, the Northern Circuit receives fewer climbers, creating a peaceful wilderness experience with breathtaking views in every direction. The route circles the mountain’s northern slopes, offering unique panoramas of the Kenyan plains, rugged volcanic landscapes, and spectacular sunrise and sunset views.
This itinerary also passes through several ecological zones, including lush rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone. The extra days on the mountain allow climbers to fully appreciate Kilimanjaro’s changing scenery while giving their bodies more time to adjust to the altitude.
The 8-Day Northern Circuit Route is ideal for first-time climbers, photographers, nature lovers, and anyone who prefers a slower pace and a more immersive trekking experience. If you are looking for one of the most scenic and rewarding ways to reach Uhuru Peak, this itinerary is one of the best choices on Mount Kilimanjaro.
The best time to climb the 8-Day Northern Circuit Route is during the dry seasons from January to March and June to October. These months offer clearer skies, better trail conditions, and excellent visibility for enjoying the spectacular scenery along Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes.
January to March is ideal for climbers seeking quieter trails, cooler temperatures, and beautiful mountain views. This period is generally less crowded and provides a more peaceful trekking experience.
June to October is the most popular climbing season due to its stable weather and dry conditions. During these months, trekkers can enjoy clear views of Kibo Peak, the Kenyan plains, and stunning sunrise and sunset scenery. However, trails may be busier, especially between July and September.
The rainy seasons, typically April to May and November, bring wetter and more challenging conditions, making trails muddy and reducing visibility. Although the mountain becomes greener and less crowded, most climbers prefer the dry seasons for a more comfortable experience.
For the best combination of weather, scenery, and trekking conditions, we recommend climbing the 8-Day Northern Circuit Route between January and March or June and October.

During this meeting, your guide will review the 8-Day Northern Circuit Route itinerary, discuss safety procedures, conduct a full equipment check, and answer any questions you may have about the climb. This is also an excellent opportunity to rent any missing gear and make final preparations for the expedition.
Take time to rest, stay hydrated, and prepare mentally for the incredible journey ahead. Tomorrow, your adventure to the Roof of Africa officially begins.
Distance: Approximately 50 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha
Driving Time: 1-1.5 hours
Elevation: Arusha (1,400 m)
Accommodation: Ameg Lodge Hotel
Meals: Dinner (depending on arrival time)
Today, your 8-Day Northern Circuit Route adventure officially begins. After an early breakfast in Arusha, you will drive to the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro through beautiful countryside and small local villages before arriving at Londorossi Gate, where registration formalities will be completed.
After the park procedures, a short drive will take you to the trailhead, where you will meet your mountain crew and begin your first trek on Africa’s highest mountain.
The trail gently climbs through Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest, one of the most beautiful and untouched sections of the mountain. Towering trees, giant ferns, and moss-covered branches surround the path, creating a peaceful atmosphere as you begin your journey.
This forest is rich in wildlife, and if you are lucky, you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species hidden among the trees. The gradual ascent makes today an excellent introduction to the climb while allowing your body to slowly adjust to the higher elevation.
After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as the Big Tree Camp, located in the heart of the rainforest. Here, you can relax, enjoy your first dinner on the mountain, and listen to the sounds of the forest as you prepare for the days ahead.
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 2,100 m – 2,750 m
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Today, you’ll leave the lush rainforest behind and enter the beautiful heather and moorland zone as you continue your journey across the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually climbs through giant heathers and open landscapes, offering your first spectacular views of the mountain.
As the forest disappears below, the scenery changes dramatically. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak, the highest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones, as well as the vast plains stretching far below. The open landscapes and changing vegetation make today one of the most scenic transitions on the Northern Circuit Route.
This section of the trek is also important for acclimatization, as you gain significant altitude while maintaining a comfortable pace. Your guides will encourage you to walk slowly and enjoy the scenery as your body gradually adjusts to the thinner air.
After approximately 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western edge of the famous Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic areas on Mount Kilimanjaro. From camp, you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes and experience your first night above the cloud line.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 2,750 m – 3,505 m
Habitat: Heather and Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Today is a longer trekking day that takes you deeper into the spectacular high-altitude landscapes of Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you will leave Shira 1 Camp and continue east across the Shira Plateau before heading toward Moir Camp. The trail gradually gains elevation, giving your body more time to adapt as you move into the alpine desert zone.
The route offers impressive views of Kibo Peak, the highest point of Kilimanjaro, along with dramatic volcanic formations and wide-open mountain scenery. As you leave the main Shira Plateau behind, the landscape becomes more rugged and remote, with fewer signs of vegetation and a stronger sense of wilderness.
Your guide will maintain a steady, comfortable pace throughout the day, allowing you to conserve energy while continuing the acclimatization process. The gradual ascent toward Moir Camp provides an important opportunity to adjust to the increasing altitude before the route continues around the northern slopes of Kilimanjaro.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Moir Camp, situated at around 4,200 metres. This remote campsite sits in a sheltered valley surrounded by volcanic ridges and high-altitude terrain. Once you arrive, you can enjoy a warm meal, rest, hydrate, and take in the peaceful surroundings.
Distance: Approximately 14 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 3,505 m – 4,200 m
Habitat: Moorland and Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Moir Camp
Today is a scenic trekking day that takes you from the remote Moir Camp toward Buffalo Camp on the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you will leave Moir Camp and follow the trail through the rugged alpine desert, with the route gradually rising and falling across high-altitude ridges and valleys.
As you trek away from Moir Camp, you will experience a quieter side of Kilimanjaro with fewer climbers and impressive views across the northern slopes. The landscape features volcanic rocks, dry mountain vegetation, and broad open views toward Kibo Peak and the surrounding Tanzanian plains.
The trail includes several gentle ascents and descents, helping your body continue adapting to the altitude. Your guide will set a steady pace and provide regular breaks so you can stay comfortable, drink enough water, and enjoy the scenery along the way.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Buffalo Camp, located at around 4,020 metres. From the camp, you can enjoy beautiful views across the northern landscape and, when conditions are clear, look toward the Kenyan plains. The afternoon gives you time to relax, hydrate, enjoy your meals, and prepare for the next stage of the Northern Circuit Route.
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 4,200 m – 4,020 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Buffalo Camp
Today, you will continue along the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro as the Northern Circuit Route gradually connects with the Rongai side of the mountain. After breakfast, you will leave Buffalo Camp and follow the trail through the quiet alpine desert, with gentle climbs and descents along the northern landscape.
The trail offers a different perspective of Kilimanjaro, with wide views across the northern plains and dramatic views of Kibo Peak. As you continue trekking, the terrain gradually changes, and you may notice more vegetation as you move toward the Rongai side of the mountain.
This stage provides another valuable acclimatization opportunity because the route allows you to gain and lose elevation gradually rather than making a sudden ascent. Your guide will maintain a steady pace, with regular breaks for hydration and rest.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you will reach Rongai Third Cave Camp, where your mountain crew will have prepared your accommodation and meals. Once you arrive, you can relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and recover for the higher-altitude stages ahead.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 4,020 m – 3,936 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert and Moorland
Accommodation: Rongai Third Cave Camp
Today marks an important stage of your Northern Circuit climb as you leave Third Cave Camp and make your way toward School Hut, the final camp before your summit attempt. After breakfast, you will begin trekking across the high-altitude northern slopes, gradually gaining elevation as you approach the eastern side of Kibo.
The trail becomes more rugged as you climb higher, with sparse vegetation, volcanic rocks, and wide-open alpine desert scenery surrounding you. Throughout the day, you will have impressive views of Kibo’s northern face, while the changing landscape reminds you that the summit is getting closer.
The steady ascent makes today an important acclimatization stage. Your guide will keep a slow and consistent pace, allowing you to conserve energy and adjust to the increasing altitude. Regular breaks also give you time to drink water, eat snacks, and enjoy the mountain scenery.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of trekking, you will reach School Hut at around 4,750 metres. This high-altitude camp sits beneath Kibo Peak and provides the starting point for your summit attempt. Once you arrive, you will have time to rest, eat an early dinner, organize your summit equipment, and receive a briefing from your guide about the upcoming summit night.
Because the summit attempt begins very early, getting as much rest as possible at School Hut is important. Your guide and mountain crew will make sure you are prepared for the demanding climb to Uhuru Peak.
Distance: Approximately 15 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 3,936 m – 4,750 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: School Hut
Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Northern Circuit adventure as you make your summit attempt on Mount Kilimanjaro. You will wake during the night at School Hut and begin the climb toward Uhuru Peak while the mountain is still quiet and the sky is filled with stars.
After a light meal and some hot drinks, you will set off with your guide toward the summit. The trail becomes steeper as you climb through the high-altitude terrain toward the crater rim. Your guide will maintain a slow, steady pace, allowing you to conserve energy and manage the effects of the altitude.
As dawn approaches, you will reach the crater rim around Stella Point. From here, the trail continues along the rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 metres. Reaching the summit is a special moment, with breathtaking views across the surrounding landscape and the satisfaction of completing the highest part of your climb.
After spending a short time at the summit, you will begin your descent. The descent provides your body with a chance to move into lower elevations, although you should continue walking carefully and follow your guide’s instructions.
You will descend through the southern slopes of Kibo toward Millennium Camp, located in the upper forest zone. After several hours of descending, you will arrive at camp where a warm meal and a comfortable place to rest await you.
Distance: Approximately 16 km
Hiking Time: 12-15 hours
Elevation: 4,750 m – 5,895 m – 3,820 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert, Arctic and Rainforest
Accommodation: Millennium Camp
Today marks the final trekking day of your Northern Circuit Route. After breakfast at Millennium Camp, you will begin your descent through the lush rainforest toward Mweka Gate. After several days in the high-altitude environment, the return to the forest brings a noticeable change in scenery, with taller trees, greener vegetation, and a warmer climate.
The trail descends steadily through the rainforest, where you may hear birds and see different plants that were absent at higher elevations. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace, giving you time to enjoy the forest while allowing your legs to recover after the demanding summit day.
After approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking, you will reach Mweka Gate, where you will complete the park exit procedures and officially finish your Kilimanjaro climb. You will have time to celebrate your achievement with your guides and porters before saying goodbye to the mountain crew.
From Mweka Gate, your driver will meet you and provide a private transfer to your hotel. Once you arrive, you can enjoy a hot shower, relax in a comfortable room, and recover after your successful climb.
