The 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is widely considered the best itinerary for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro because it combines excellent acclimatization, quieter trails, and one of the highest summit success rates on the mountain. Covering approximately 98 kilometers (61 miles), this route begins at Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side and circles the remote northern slopes before reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.
Unlike shorter routes, the Northern Circuit gives climbers extra days at altitude, allowing the body to adapt gradually. This longer schedule is one of the main reasons why summit success rates often exceed 95% when guided by experienced operators. The route also offers something that few other Kilimanjaro trails can match: wide-open views in every direction, including the Shira Plateau, Kibo Peak, the Kenyan plains, and the mountain’s quiet northern wilderness.
A typical 9-day Northern Circuit itinerary includes overnight stays at Mti Mkubwa Camp, Shira 1 Camp, Moir Hut, Buffalo Camp, Third Cave Camp, School Hut, Millennium Camp, and Mweka Camp before descending to Mweka Gate. Each day is carefully planned to support acclimatization while giving trekkers time to enjoy changing landscapes, from rainforest and moorland to alpine desert and Arctic summit conditions.
This route is ideal for first-time climbers, photographers, nature lovers, and travelers who want the highest chance of reaching the summit without rushing. Although the Northern Circuit is one of the longer Kilimanjaro routes, many climbers find that the extra days create a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.
At WeWild Travel, our local mountain guides design every Northern Circuit climb with safety, quality equipment, nutritious meals, emergency oxygen, and responsible porter treatment. Choosing the right itinerary can make the difference between simply climbing Kilimanjaro and truly experiencing Africa’s highest mountain.

The 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is an excellent choice for trekkers who want more time to acclimatize, quieter trails, spectacular scenery, and a high chance of reaching Uhuru Peak. Unlike shorter Kilimanjaro routes, the Northern Circuit takes a longer path around the mountain, giving your body more time to adjust to altitude while you explore Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes.
This approach ensures every climber has the best possible balance between safety, support, and summit success.
The best time to climb the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is from June to October and January to February, when Kilimanjaro generally has drier weather, clearer skies, and better trekking conditions. June to October is the most popular period, while January and February offer another excellent climbing window with good visibility and fewer crowds. The longer Northern Circuit itinerary can also be climbed during the shoulder months, but trekkers should expect a greater chance of rain and cloud.
If you are planning to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the most important step is choosing a trusted local operator. Booking with an experienced company ensures proper safety support, reliable logistics, and a well-organized expedition from start to summit.
For trekkers who want a safe and professionally guided experience, it is strongly recommended to book with a licensed local operator such as WeWild Travel, which provides structured support throughout the entire journey to Uhuru Peak.
Today, you’ll arrive in Tanzania and begin your exciting journey toward climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), our friendly WeWild Travel team will welcome you and transfer you to Mount Meru Hotel in Arusha, where you will spend your first night before the trek.
The drive from the airport to Arusha takes approximately 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic. Along the way, you can enjoy your first views of the Tanzanian landscape and begin to experience the warm hospitality of the country.
After arriving at Mount Meru Hotel, check in and take time to relax after your flight. Depending on your arrival time, you can enjoy the hotel’s facilities, have a meal, or simply rest and recover before your climb.
Later in the evening, you will meet your experienced mountain guide for a pre-climb briefing. Your guide will explain the 10-Day Northern Circuit Route itinerary, discuss altitude acclimatization and mountain safety, check your trekking equipment, and answer any questions before the expedition begins.
This briefing is also the right time to identify any missing equipment and make final preparations. Get a good night’s rest, stay hydrated, and prepare for your first trekking day tomorrow.
Your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route begins at Londorossi Gate, the western entrance to Mount Kilimanjaro National Park. After completing the park registration and meeting your mountain crew, you drive toward the trailhead and begin your first hike through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful montane rainforest.
The trail is shaded by tall trees and thick vegetation, creating a cool and peaceful environment for your first day on the mountain. As you walk, you may hear different bird species and, occasionally, see monkeys moving through the forest. The quiet surroundings provide a gentle introduction to the adventure ahead.
Today’s hike is relatively short, allowing you to settle into a comfortable walking rhythm before tackling longer and higher sections of the Northern Circuit. Your guide will set a slow pace and encourage you to drink water regularly and take breaks when needed. Starting gradually is important as your body begins adjusting to the mountain environment.
After several hours, you reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first overnight stop on Kilimanjaro. Once you arrive, you can rest while the mountain crew prepares your tent and meals. Take time to enjoy the forest atmosphere and prepare for the following day’s climb toward Shira 1 Camp.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Starting Elevation: Londorossi Gate – approximately 2,100 m
Camp Elevation: Mti Mkubwa Camp – approximately 2,780 m
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Montane rainforest
After breakfast at Mti Mkubwa Camp, you leave the forest behind and continue climbing toward Shira 1 Camp. The trail gradually moves through the upper rainforest before opening into the heath and moorland zone, where the landscape becomes wider, drier, and more exposed.
As you gain elevation, the vegetation changes noticeably. Tall trees become smaller and more scattered, while grasses, shrubs, and distinctive high-altitude plants begin to dominate the trail. The open surroundings also create your first broad views across Kilimanjaro’s western slopes.
Your guide will keep a steady and comfortable pace because today’s climb gains significant elevation. Walking slowly, drinking plenty of water, and taking regular short breaks help your body begin adapting to the changing altitude. The Northern Circuit is designed to give you time to acclimatize rather than rushing from one camp to another.
After reaching Shira 1 Camp, you can settle into your tent and enjoy a freshly prepared meal while taking in the peaceful surroundings of the Shira Plateau. On a clear afternoon, you may get beautiful views toward Kibo and the surrounding mountain landscape.
Distance: Approximately 8-9 km
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Starting Elevation: Mti Mkubwa Camp – approximately 2,780 m
Camp Elevation: Shira 1 Camp – approximately 3,505 m
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Heath and moorland
After breakfast at Shira 1 Camp, you continue your journey across the open Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp. Compared with the previous day, today’s trek is more relaxed, giving you valuable time to enjoy the scenery while your body continues adapting to the increasing altitude.
The trail crosses broad moorland with clear views of the surrounding volcanic landscape. As you walk, Kibo Peak becomes more impressive in front of you, offering an early glimpse of the summit that awaits later in the trek. The open terrain also provides excellent opportunities for photography and quiet moments to appreciate Kilimanjaro’s vast landscape.
Your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace throughout the hike. Although the distance is manageable, the altitude makes it important not to rush. Drink water regularly, take short breaks, and follow your guide’s advice to give your body the best chance to acclimatize.
You arrive at Shira 2 Camp after several hours of walking and settle into camp. After lunch, you can relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings before dinner. The extra time at this elevation is an important part of your preparation for the higher terrain ahead.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Trekking Time: 4-5 hours
Starting Elevation: Shira 1 Camp – approximately 3,505 m
Camp Elevation: Shira 2 Camp – approximately 3,850 m
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Heath and moorland
After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, you leave the open Shira Plateau and continue toward Moir Hut, one of the more remote camps on the Northern Circuit Route. Today’s trail takes you into a quieter and more rugged part of Mount Kilimanjaro, with the landscape becoming increasingly rocky as you gain altitude.
The route gradually climbs through the high-altitude moorland, with several gentle rises and dips along the way. You will notice fewer plants as the elevation increases, while volcanic rocks and wide, dramatic views become more common. Looking back, the Shira Plateau stretches across the mountain, while Kibo Peak continues to dominate the horizon ahead.
This is an important acclimatization day because you spend more time at higher elevation before descending slightly to camp. Your guide will keep a steady pace and encourage regular hydration and short breaks. Take your time and enjoy the changing scenery rather than focusing on speed.
Moir Hut is located in a secluded valley beneath the Lent Hills. After arriving, you can rest at camp, enjoy a hot meal, and recover for the next stage of the trek. The peaceful setting makes this one of the most distinctive nights on the Northern Circuit.
Distance: Approximately 10-12 km
Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Starting Elevation: Shira 2 Camp – approximately 3,850 m
Highest Point: Approximately 4,200 m
Camp Elevation: Moir Hut – approximately 4,200 m
Accommodation: Moir Hut Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
After breakfast at Moir Hut Camp, you continue along the Northern Circuit toward Buffalo Camp, crossing the remote northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail begins with a climb out of the Moir Valley and then follows a series of ridges and rolling sections through the high-altitude landscape.
As you move farther from the Shira Plateau, the scenery becomes more rugged and peaceful. The route offers a different side of Kilimanjaro, with wide views across the northern plains and, on clear days, toward the Kenyan border. The combination of rocky terrain, open valleys, and distant mountain views makes this one of the most scenic sections of the trek.
Today’s route includes several ups and downs, so the hike can feel more demanding than the distance suggests. Your guide will maintain a steady pace and encourage you to drink water regularly and take enough breaks. This gradual movement at altitude is an important part of your acclimatization before reaching the higher sections of the mountain.
After several hours, you arrive at Buffalo Camp, a quiet campsite overlooking the northern side of Kilimanjaro. Once you settle in, you can enjoy a warm meal, relax, and take in the peaceful surroundings as the sun begins to set over the mountain landscape.
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Trekking Time: 5-7 hours
Starting Elevation: Moir Hut Camp – approximately 4,200 m
Highest Point: Approximately 4,300 m
Camp Elevation: Buffalo Camp – approximately 4,033 m
Accommodation: Buffalo Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Moorland and alpine desert
After breakfast at Buffalo Camp, you continue your trek along the northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro toward Third Cave Camp. The trail takes you through a remote and peaceful part of the Northern Circuit, with open views and rugged high-altitude terrain surrounding you.
Today’s route follows a series of gradual climbs and descents as you make your way eastward. The landscape remains relatively dry and open, with low vegetation and volcanic rocks becoming more noticeable as you approach the higher parts of the mountain. Looking back along the trail, you can appreciate how far you have traveled since entering Kilimanjaro’s western slopes.
Although the day’s hike is not extremely long, walking at nearly 4,000 meters can make the trek feel demanding. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace and encourage you to stay hydrated, eat well, and take regular breaks. The gradual changes in elevation continue to help your body prepare for the summit section ahead.
After reaching Third Cave Camp, you can settle into camp, enjoy a warm meal, and relax. The peaceful surroundings provide a welcome opportunity to recover before tomorrow’s climb toward School Hut, your final overnight stop before the summit.
Distance: Approximately 8-10 km
Trekking Time: 5-6 hours
Starting Elevation: Buffalo Camp – approximately 4,033 m
Camp Elevation: Third Cave Camp – approximately 3,936 m
Accommodation: Third Cave Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Alpine desert and moorland
After breakfast at Third Cave Camp, you begin the gradual climb toward School Hut, your final overnight camp before the summit attempt. Today’s trek takes you farther into Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude zone, where the landscape becomes more open, rocky, and increasingly dramatic.
The trail climbs steadily toward the eastern side of Kibo, with the vegetation becoming thinner as you gain elevation. The higher you walk, the closer the summit cone appears, giving you a clear sense that the most important stage of your adventure is approaching. The surrounding alpine landscape also offers impressive views of the mountain’s northern slopes and the vast plains below.
Because you are now trekking at a much higher elevation, your guide will keep a slow and consistent pace. Take plenty of water, eat your meals properly, and listen to your body throughout the hike. Spending time at this altitude is an important part of preparing for tomorrow’s demanding summit climb.
After reaching School Hut, you will settle into camp and enjoy a warm meal. Your guide will explain the summit schedule and check that your clothing, headlamp, water, and other equipment are ready. An early rest is important because you will wake during the night for your final ascent toward Uhuru Peak.
Distance: Approximately 7 km
Trekking Time: 4-6 hours
Starting Elevation: Third Cave Camp – approximately 3,936 m
Camp Elevation: School Hut – approximately 4,750 m
Accommodation: School Hut
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Alpine desert
Today is the most demanding and rewarding day of your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route. You wake in the early hours at School Hut and begin your summit attempt while the mountain is still quiet and dark. The goal is to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa.
The climb starts with a steady ascent over rocky terrain toward the summit of Kibo. Your guide will set a slow pace, allowing you to conserve energy and manage the effects of the extreme altitude. As the sky begins to brighten, you may witness a spectacular sunrise over the surrounding mountains and plains.
You continue toward Gilman’s Point and along the crater rim before making the final ascent to Uhuru Peak. Reaching the summit is a remarkable achievement, and you will have time to celebrate, take photographs, and enjoy the views when weather conditions are clear.
After your summit experience, you begin the long descent toward Millennium Camp on the southern side of Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually moves from the rocky summit zone into lower alpine terrain, where breathing becomes easier as you lose elevation.
After reaching Millennium Camp, enjoy a warm meal and settle in for a well-earned rest. After such a demanding day, an early night will help your body recover before the final descent to Mweka Gate tomorrow.
Distance: Approximately 13-15 km
Trekking Time: 12-15 hours
Starting Elevation: School Hut – approximately 4,750 m
Highest Point: Uhuru Peak – 5,895 m
Camp Elevation: Millennium Camp – approximately 3,820 m
Accommodation: Millennium Camp
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Habitat: Arctic, alpine desert, and heath
After breakfast at Millennium Camp, you begin the final descent of your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route. The trail heads downhill through the lush montane forest, creating a refreshing change from the rocky and dry landscapes you experienced near the summit.
As you descend, the air becomes warmer and the vegetation becomes denser. The forest is home to a variety of plants and birds, and you may occasionally hear wildlife moving through the trees. Take your time and enjoy the peaceful surroundings as you make your way toward the park exit.
Although the descent is easier on your breathing because of the lower altitude, your legs may still feel tired after yesterday’s long summit day. Your guide will maintain a comfortable pace and allow regular breaks so you can walk safely and enjoy your final hours on the mountain.
Eventually, you reach Mweka Gate, where you complete the park exit procedures and officially finish your Kilimanjaro trek. After signing out, you can celebrate your achievement and thank your guides and porters for their support throughout the journey.
Your vehicle will then transfer you from Mweka Gate to your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, where you can take a well-deserved shower, enjoy a comfortable meal, and rest after completing the Northern Circuit.
Distance: Approximately 10 km
Trekking Time: 3-4 hours
Starting Elevation: Millennium Camp – approximately 3,820 m
Ending Elevation: Mweka Gate – approximately 1,640 m
Accommodation: Mount Meru Hotel
Meals: Breakfast and lunch
Habitat: Montane rainforest
