The 9-day Lemosho Route itinerary gives you a scenic and gradual way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters. The trek starts on Kilimanjaro’s western side and takes you through rainforest, the Shira Plateau, high-altitude desert, and the dramatic summit zone. You will spend nine trekking days on the mountain, with an overnight at Crater Camp before your final ascent to Uhuru Peak. This longer schedule gives you more time to adjust to the increasing altitude while enjoying the changing landscapes of Kilimanjaro.

Your adventure begins with arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and a transfer to Moshi for your pre-climb briefing and overnight stay. The following morning, you travel to the Lemosho starting point and begin walking through the lush mountain forest toward Forest Camp. Each day takes you higher and introduces a new environment as you continue toward the summit.

The route crosses the beautiful Shira Plateau before reaching Shira 2 Camp. From there, you climb toward Lava Tower, an important high-altitude point on the route, before descending to Barranco Camp. This climb-high, sleep-lower pattern gives your body valuable time to adapt to the altitude. You then continue through Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp, your final main camp before summit night.

The most distinctive part of this itinerary comes next. From Barafu, you climb toward Kibo Crater and spend the night at Crater Camp. This high-altitude experience places you close to the summit and gives you a unique opportunity to experience Kilimanjaro’s crater landscape before tackling Uhuru Peak.

At WeWild Travel, our experienced local guides and mountain crew support you throughout the climb. We focus on careful pacing, good communication, nutritious meals, proper camp support, and responsible mountain practices. If you want a longer Lemosho climb with varied scenery, gradual altitude gain, and a memorable Crater Camp experience, this 9-day itinerary offers an excellent way to experience Kilimanjaro.

Best Time to Climb the 9-Day Lemosho Route

  • The best time to climb the 9-Day Lemosho Route is during Tanzania’s dry seasons, especially from June to October and from January to February. These months usually offer more stable weather, clearer mountain views, and better trail conditions. However, you can climb Lemosho throughout the year, and each season offers a different experience.
  • June to October: This is one of the most popular periods for Kilimanjaro. The weather generally stays drier, skies often remain clearer, and daytime conditions suit long trekking days. July, August, and September can bring colder nights, especially at higher camps.
  • January to February: These months provide another good climbing window. The mountain often experiences relatively dry conditions, with good visibility and comfortable trekking temperatures. They also offer an excellent opportunity for trekkers who prefer to climb outside the main mid-year season.
  • March to May: These months bring the long rains, particularly from March through May. Rain can make lower trails wetter and cloudier, while conditions around the summit can become more challenging. Experienced trekkers can still climb during this period, but you should prepare for wetter conditions.
  • November: The short rains can affect Kilimanjaro during November. Rain showers may occur along the route, although conditions can change quickly and some days can remain clear.

Day 1 Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Your 9-Day Lemosho Route trek officially begins today. After breakfast in Moshi, your WeWild Travel team will collect you and drive toward the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey takes you away from the busy town and into the quieter landscapes surrounding the mountain before you reach Lemosho Gate, where your Kilimanjaro adventure begins.

At the gate, your guide completes the park registration while the mountain crew organizes the trekking equipment and supplies. You can use this time to prepare your daypack, take photographs, and enjoy the atmosphere before entering Kilimanjaro National Park.

Once you start walking, the trail leads into the montane rainforest, one of the most beautiful sections of the Lemosho Route. The forest feels cool and peaceful, with tall trees, ferns, moss, vines, and thick vegetation surrounding the trail. After the open landscapes around the park entrance, the forest creates a completely different trekking experience.

Keep your eyes and ears open as you walk. Wildlife can sometimes appear along this section of the route, although sightings depend on the season, weather, and natural movement of animals. You may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the treetops, along with blue monkeys and a variety of forest birds. With some luck, trekkers may also notice signs of larger wildlife deeper in the forest. Your guide will help you identify animals, birds, plants, and interesting features along the trail.

The first day’s hike does not focus on speed. Your guide sets a comfortable pace and gives you time to enjoy the forest while your body begins adapting to the mountain environment. You gradually gain elevation as the trail winds through the trees toward Mti Mkubwa Camp, your first overnight camp.

After reaching camp, the crew will help you settle in while your cook prepares your first mountain meal. You can relax, enjoy the surrounding forest, and meet other members of your trekking team. Your guide will also explain the next day’s route and remind you about hydration, pacing, and altitude awareness.

The evening brings cooler temperatures and a peaceful atmosphere in the forest. After dinner, get some rest because tomorrow you continue toward Shira 1 Camp as the landscape gradually changes from dense rainforest to higher mountain vegetation.

Day 1 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Lemosho Gate
  • Destination: Mti Mkubwa Camp
  • Elevation Gain: Approximately 1,000 meters
  • Trekking Time: Around 3-4 hours
  • Distance: Approximately 7 km
  • Environment: Montane rainforest
  • Wildlife: Black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and forest birds may be seen
  • Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

What Makes This Day Special

The first trekking day introduces you to the quieter side of Kilimanjaro. You begin among dense rainforest, listen to birds calling through the trees, and gradually leave the lower slopes behind. The possibility of seeing monkeys in their natural environment adds another memorable element to the start of your climb.

Important: Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Keep a respectful distance from animals, follow your guide’s instructions, and never feed or approach wildlife.

Day 2 Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Wake up to the fresh mountain air at Mti Mkubwa Camp and enjoy breakfast before starting the second day of your 9-Day Lemosho Route. Today, the trail takes you higher through the changing vegetation of Kilimanjaro as you leave the rainforest behind and move toward the open Shira Plateau.

The morning begins with a steady climb through the upper forest. As you gain elevation, the dense trees gradually become shorter and more scattered. You will notice a clear change in the landscape as the trail enters the moorland zone, where giant heathers, grasses, wildflowers, and unusual high-altitude plants replace much of the thick rainforest.

This section gives you a completely different view of Kilimanjaro. The forest becomes more open, allowing you to look back toward the lower slopes and surrounding countryside. On clear days, the views can stretch across the western side of the mountain. Take your time here and enjoy the scenery rather than focusing only on reaching camp.

As you continue climbing, the trail eventually brings you toward the Shira Plateau, one of the most scenic areas on the Lemosho Route. Shira is an ancient volcanic landscape created by Kilimanjaro’s volcanic history. Wide valleys, rocky ground, grasslands, and highland vegetation create a dramatic contrast with the forest from the previous day.

You may also notice Kibo Peak becoming more prominent as you approach the higher sections of the mountain. Your guide will help you understand the surrounding landscape and point out interesting plants, geological features, and distant views along the way.

Today’s hike also plays an important role in your acclimatization. You gain considerable elevation, so your guide will keep a slow and comfortable pace. Drink water regularly, listen to your body, and communicate with your guide if you notice any symptoms of altitude discomfort.

After several hours on the trail, you arrive at Shira 1 Camp, where the mountain crew will have your camp ready. Enjoy a warm meal, relax, and take in the peaceful high-altitude surroundings. If the weather remains clear, the evening can offer beautiful views across the Shira Plateau.

Tomorrow, you continue deeper into the Shira Plateau toward Shira 2 Camp, giving you more time to explore this remarkable part of Kilimanjaro.

Day 2 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Mti Mkubwa Camp
  • Destination: Shira 1 Camp
  • Distance: Approximately 8 km
  • Trekking Time: Around 5-6 hours
  • Environment: Moorland and highland plateau
  • Main Landscape: Shira Plateau
  • Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

What Makes This Day Special

Day 2 marks one of the biggest landscape changes on the Lemosho Route. You start among the trees and finish in a wide, open highland environment. The transition from rainforest to moorland and the first views across the Shira Plateau make this a memorable day of the climb.

The trail also gives you more opportunities to slow down, appreciate the mountain, and prepare your body for the higher elevations ahead.

Day 3 Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

After breakfast at Shira 1 Camp, you begin the third day of your 9-Day Lemosho Route with a relatively short and steady trek across the spectacular Shira Plateau. Today gives you more time to enjoy the high-altitude landscape, take photographs, and allow your body to continue adjusting to the increasing elevation.

The trail crosses open moorland with fewer trees and much wider views than the lower sections of the mountain. You will walk through a landscape of volcanic rocks, grasses, heather, and hardy plants that survive in Kilimanjaro’s cool and dry highlands. The peaceful surroundings make this section feel very different from the rainforest you experienced on the first day.

As you walk across the plateau, look back toward the western slopes of Kilimanjaro and ahead toward Kibo, the highest volcanic cone of the mountain. On a clear day, the enormous summit rises above the surrounding landscape and gives you a preview of the challenge ahead. Your guide can also explain the volcanic history of the mountain and point out interesting rock formations along the trail.

Today does not require a fast pace. The relatively gentle distance gives you an excellent opportunity to focus on acclimatization. Your guide will encourage you to walk slowly, drink water regularly, and take short breaks when necessary. Spending another night at a high elevation also helps you become more comfortable with the mountain environment before the route climbs significantly higher.

After several hours, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp, where the mountain crew welcomes you and prepares your camp. Enjoy lunch, rest, and take time to appreciate the wide views across the plateau. Depending on the weather, the afternoon can provide beautiful opportunities for photography as clouds move around Kibo and the surrounding peaks.

Your guide will brief you about the following day’s trek, which takes you from Shira 2 toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This important section introduces a higher elevation and forms part of your gradual acclimatization strategy.

Day 3 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Shira 1 Camp
  • Destination: Shira 2 Camp
  • Distance: Approximately 7 km
  • Trekking Time: Around 3-4 hours
  • Environment: Moorland and high-altitude plateau
  • Main Landscape: Shira Plateau
  • Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

What Makes This Day Special

Day 3 gives you time to experience the Shira Plateau without rushing. The open landscape, volcanic scenery, quiet trails, and views toward Kibo make this one of the most scenic parts of the Lemosho Route.

It also gives your body another valuable day to adjust before you climb toward Lava Tower and the higher sections of Kilimanjaro.

Day 4 Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today is one of the most important days of your 9-Day Lemosho Route. After breakfast at Shira 2 Camp, you leave the open Shira Plateau and begin a gradual climb toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,600 meters (15,090 feet) before descending to Barranco Camp. The day follows the classic “climb high, sleep lower” approach, giving your body valuable exposure to higher altitude before you spend the night at a lower elevation.

The trail initially crosses a rugged highland landscape with volcanic rocks, sparse vegetation, and wide views across Kilimanjaro. As you climb, the air becomes noticeably thinner and the landscape becomes harsher. You may notice fewer plants and more exposed volcanic terrain as you approach Lava Tower.

Reaching Lava Tower

After several hours of steady walking, you reach Lava Tower, one of the most recognizable landmarks on Kilimanjaro. The tower rises from the surrounding volcanic landscape and marks a significant point in your acclimatization journey.

This is a good place to slow down, have lunch, take photographs, and allow your body to adjust to the elevation. Some trekkers may notice mild altitude symptoms such as a headache or reduced appetite at this height. Your guide will monitor how you feel and encourage you to communicate any discomfort immediately.

After spending time around Lava Tower, the trail begins a dramatic descent toward Barranco Valley. This change in elevation often feels noticeable as you move into a warmer and more sheltered environment.

Descending to Barranco Camp

The descent takes you through a striking alpine landscape toward the famous Barranco Wall. Giant senecios and other hardy plants appear among the volcanic rocks, creating one of the most distinctive environments on Kilimanjaro.

As you approach Barranco Camp, Kibo Peak rises dramatically in the background. The view from camp can be spectacular, especially when the evening clouds clear around the mountain.

Once you reach camp, the crew will prepare your tent and a warm meal. Take time to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the scenery. Your guide will also explain what to expect tomorrow as you tackle the Barranco Wall and continue toward Karanga Camp.

Day 4 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Shira 2 Camp
  • Destination: Barranco Camp
  • Key Point: Lava Tower
  • Lava Tower Elevation: Approximately 4,600 m
  • Distance: Approximately 10-11 km
  • Trekking Time: Around 7-8 hours
  • Environment: Alpine desert and high-altitude volcanic terrain
  • Accommodation: Barranco Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Why This Day Matters

Day 4 combines altitude, scenery, and acclimatization in one challenging trek. You climb higher than your sleeping altitude at Lava Tower and then descend to Barranco Camp, helping you experience a higher elevation without spending the night at the highest point reached that day.

The dramatic transition from the rocky Lava Tower landscape to the giant senecios and towering Barranco Wall makes this one of the most memorable days on the Lemosho Route.

Day 5 Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Day 5 brings one of the most exciting sections of the 9-Day Lemosho Route. After breakfast at Barranco Camp, you begin the climb toward Karanga Camp, crossing the famous Barranco Wall before continuing through the rugged alpine landscape toward the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro.

The morning starts with the Barranco Wall, which rises dramatically above the campsite. From a distance, the wall can look intimidating, but the trail follows a manageable climbing route rather than requiring technical climbing equipment. Your guide will lead you carefully, choosing a steady pace and helping you move confidently over the rocky sections.

As you climb, you will use your hands occasionally for balance while stepping between rocks and around natural features in the trail. The experience feels adventurous, but you do not need ropes or technical climbing skills. Take your time, follow your guide, and enjoy the changing views as you gain height.

Once you reach the top of the Barranco Wall, the scenery opens dramatically. You can look back across Barranco Valley and see the trail you climbed earlier in the morning. On clear days, the surrounding ridges and the enormous slopes of Kibo create excellent opportunities for photographs.

The trail then descends slightly before crossing a series of ridges and valleys toward Karanga Valley. This section involves several ups and downs, so the day can feel more demanding than its distance suggests. Your guide will maintain a slow, comfortable pace to conserve your energy for the days ahead.

As you approach Karanga Camp, the landscape becomes increasingly dry and rocky. The vegetation becomes sparse, with hardy plants surviving in the harsh alpine environment. Kibo remains an impressive presence above you, reminding you that the summit is getting closer.

After reaching camp, enjoy a warm meal and take time to rest. Your mountain crew will prepare your campsite while you recover from the day’s climb. Your guide will also brief you about tomorrow’s trek to Barafu Camp, the final main camp before your journey toward Crater Camp and Uhuru Peak.

Day 5 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Barranco Camp
  • Destination: Karanga Camp
  • Distance: Approximately 5 km
  • Trekking Time: Around 4-5 hours
  • Main Challenge: Barranco Wall
  • Environment: Alpine desert
  • Highest Point: Around 4,200 meters
  • Accommodation: Karanga Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

What Makes This Day Special

The Barranco Wall provides the day’s biggest adventure, while the views from its upper sections offer a memorable perspective of Kilimanjaro. The relatively short trekking distance also gives you time to enjoy the trail without rushing.

By the time you reach Karanga Camp, you are firmly within Kilimanjaro’s high-altitude environment and only a few stages away from the summit.

Day 6 Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Today marks an important stage of your 9-Day Lemosho Route as you leave Karanga Camp and climb toward Barafu Camp, the final main camp before your journey to Kibo Crater and Uhuru Peak. The trail becomes more rugged as you enter the upper alpine desert, and the landscape shows how close you are to the summit.

After breakfast, you begin walking through a dry, rocky environment with very little vegetation. The lush forest from your first trekking day now feels far away. Around you, volcanic rocks, steep slopes, and wide views create a dramatic high-altitude landscape.

The trail gradually climbs toward Barafu Ridge. As you gain elevation, the air becomes thinner, so your guide will keep the pace slow and steady. Today is not about walking quickly. Conserving energy and staying hydrated are important because you will need that energy for the summit stages ahead.

Along the way, you can look back toward the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. On clear days, you may see the valleys and ridges you crossed during the previous days, while Kibo Peak dominates the landscape ahead. The changing perspective gives you a strong sense of how much ground you have covered since starting at Lemosho Gate.

After several hours, you reach Barafu Camp, located at approximately 4,673 meters. The name “Barafu” means “ice” in Swahili, reflecting the cold conditions you can experience at this elevation. The camp sits on an exposed ridge, so strong winds and low temperatures can occur, especially after sunset.

Once you arrive, the mountain crew will provide your meal and help you settle into camp. Your guide will then explain the next stage of the climb, including the early start toward Crater Camp.

This afternoon, focus on resting rather than exploring far from camp. Eat well, drink regularly, organize your summit equipment, and try to sleep or rest as much as possible. Tomorrow takes you higher toward Kibo Crater, so conserving your energy today matters.

Day 6 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Karanga Camp
  • Destination: Barafu Camp
  • Distance: Approximately 4 km
  • Trekking Time: Around 3-4 hours
  • Barafu Camp Elevation: Approximately 4,673 m
  • Environment: Alpine desert
  • Terrain: Rocky and steep in places
  • Accommodation: Barafu Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

What Makes This Day Special

Reaching Barafu Camp makes the summit feel very close. You have crossed the rainforest, Shira Plateau, Lava Tower, Barranco Wall, and Karanga Valley, and now you stand high above the surrounding landscape.

The most demanding part of the adventure is still ahead, but the quiet atmosphere at Barafu Camp gives you time to rest, prepare your summit equipment, and mentally focus on the climb toward Crater Camp and Uhuru Peak.

Day 7 Barafu Camp to Crater Camp

Today takes you into one of the most dramatic and memorable sections of your 9-Day Lemosho Route. You leave Barafu Camp and climb higher toward Kibo Crater, entering the summit zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. By the end of the day, you will spend the night at Crater Camp, a unique high-altitude campsite close to Uhuru Peak.

After an early breakfast, your guide leads you from Barafu Camp toward the upper slopes of Kibo. The landscape changes quickly as you leave the lower alpine desert behind. The trail becomes increasingly rocky, steep, and exposed, with very little vegetation surviving at this elevation.

Your pace becomes slower as you climb. At more than 4,600 meters, the air contains much less oxygen than at lower elevations, so your guide will encourage you to walk slowly and steadily. Take regular breaks, drink according to your guide’s advice, and communicate immediately if you feel unwell.

As you continue toward the crater, the surrounding landscape becomes increasingly barren and volcanic. On clear days, you can look back across the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro and see the valleys and ridges far below. The higher you climb, the more dramatic the views become.

Eventually, you reach the Kibo Crater area, where the landscape changes again. The crater contains a remarkable volcanic environment with rugged rock formations, ash-covered ground, and the remains of Kilimanjaro’s glacial features. Depending on current conditions, you may see ice and glacier formations around the crater area.

Overnight at Crater Camp

Reaching Crater Camp marks a major achievement. Instead of descending to a lower camp after reaching the crater, this itinerary allows you to spend the night in this exceptional high-altitude environment.

Your mountain crew will prepare the campsite and a warm meal while you rest and take in the extraordinary surroundings. The temperature can drop significantly after sunset, so keep your warm clothing, sleeping bag, gloves, and other cold-weather equipment ready.

If the weather remains clear, the evening can offer an unforgettable view of the high-altitude landscape beneath the sky. However, conditions can change quickly at this elevation, so always follow your guide’s instructions and remain close to the designated camp area.

After dinner, focus on resting. Tomorrow is the summit day. You will leave Crater Camp and climb toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, before beginning the long descent toward Mweka Camp.

Day 7 Trek Details

  • Starting Point: Barafu Camp
  • Destination: Crater Camp
  • Distance: Approximately 3-4 km
  • Trekking Time: Around 3-4 hours
  • Crater Camp Elevation: Approximately 5,790 m
  • Environment: Arctic and volcanic summit zone
  • Terrain: Rocky, steep, and exposed
  • Accommodation: Crater Camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

What Makes This Day Special

The highlight of Day 7 is reaching Kibo Crater and spending the night at Crater Camp. Very few Kilimanjaro experiences compare with sleeping at such a high elevation, surrounded by the mountain’s dramatic volcanic landscape.

This day also brings you within reach of Uhuru Peak. After several days of gradual climbing, the summit is now the next major goal.

Day 8 Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak and Descend to Mweka Camp

Today is the summit day and the defining moment of your 9-Day Lemosho Route. You wake up at Crater Camp, already high on Mount Kilimanjaro, with Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) waiting above you. After breakfast and a final preparation with your guide, you begin the climb toward the highest point in Africa.

The trail from Crater Camp to Uhuru Peak takes you across the upper slopes of Kibo. The terrain remains rocky and exposed, while the thin air makes every step more demanding. Your guide will set a slow, steady pace and monitor the group carefully. At this elevation, patience matters more than speed.

As you climb, you move toward the crater rim and continue across the high summit area. Depending on the weather and current mountain conditions, you may see dramatic volcanic landscapes, snow, ice, and glacier remnants around Kibo. The views can stretch across the crater and toward the surrounding Tanzanian landscape.

Reaching Uhuru Peak

After several hours of climbing, you reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest elevation in Africa. Take a moment to celebrate your achievement, enjoy the summit surroundings, and capture photographs with your guide and trekking team.

Your time at the summit may remain limited because of the extreme altitude and cold conditions. Once everyone has enjoyed the achievement, you begin the descent.

Descending Toward Mweka Camp

The descent takes you away from the summit zone and down the southern slopes of Kilimanjaro. As you lose elevation, the air gradually becomes denser and the environment begins to change.

You eventually reconnect with the lower sections of the mountain before continuing toward Mweka Camp, your overnight destination. After the demanding summit climb, reaching camp gives you a chance to rest, enjoy a warm meal, and reflect on the achievement of reaching Uhuru Peak.

Take the climb slowly, listen carefully to your guide, and focus on one step at a time. Reaching Uhuru Peak is the culmination of every day you have spent crossing Kilimanjaro’s forests, valleys, plateaus, and high-altitude terrain.

Day 9 Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Arusha

After breakfast at Mweka Camp, begin your final descent through the lush mountain forest toward Mweka Gate. The trail becomes greener and warmer as you lose altitude.

At Mweka Gate, complete the park exit procedures and celebrate your successful 9-Day Lemosho Route climb. You can also receive your summit certificate and take photos with your mountain crew.
