Overview
The 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is Kilimanjaro’s longest main trekking itinerary, giving climbers more time for gradual altitude adjustment while exploring the mountain’s remote northern slopes. The route reaches Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres and suits trekkers who prefer a longer, quieter climb with a carefully paced itinerary.
The journey begins on Kilimanjaro’s western side and crosses the Shira Plateau before turning north around Kibo. Unlike routes that approach the summit through busier southern trails, the Northern Circuit leads you through less-travelled sections of the mountain. As a result, you can enjoy quieter camps, wide landscapes, and views toward northern Tanzania and Kenya in clear weather.
During the nine-day climb, you’ll trek through rainforest, heath and moorland, alpine desert, and the high-altitude summit zone. More importantly, the longer itinerary allows a gradual ascent and includes valuable acclimatization opportunities before summit night.
For climbers who value more time on the mountain, remote scenery, and a slower trekking pace, the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route is a strong choice. With WeWild Travel’s local mountain team, you’ll follow a carefully planned journey from the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro to Uhuru Peak and back to the park gate.

Day 2: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
Today, your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route adventure officially begins. After an early breakfast in Arusha, you will drive to the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro through beautiful countryside and small local villages before arriving at Londorossi Gate, where registration formalities will be completed.
After the park procedures, a short drive will take you to the trailhead, where you will meet your mountain crew and begin your first trek on Africa’s highest mountain.
The trail gently climbs through Kilimanjaro’s lush montane rainforest, one of the most beautiful and untouched sections of the mountain. Towering trees, giant ferns, and moss-covered branches surround the path, creating a peaceful atmosphere as you begin your journey.
This forest is rich in wildlife, and if you are lucky, you may spot black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species hidden among the trees. The gradual ascent makes today an excellent introduction to the climb while allowing your body to slowly adjust to the higher elevation.
After several hours of trekking, you will arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, also known as the Big Tree Camp, located in the heart of the rainforest. Here, you can relax, enjoy your first dinner on the mountain, and listen to the sounds of the forest as you prepare for the days ahead.
Distance: Approximately 6 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 2,100 m – 2,750 m
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp
Today’s Highlights
- Begin your 9-Day Northern Circuit Route adventure.
- Complete registration at Londorossi Gate.
- Trek through Kilimanjaro’s beautiful rainforest.
- Look for colobus monkeys and colorful birdlife.
- Enjoy your first night camping on Mount Kilimanjaro.
- Start acclimatizing to the mountain’s higher elevation.
Day 3: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
Today, you’ll leave the lush rainforest behind and enter the beautiful heather and moorland zone as you continue your journey across the western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually climbs through giant heathers and open landscapes, offering your first spectacular views of the mountain.
As the forest disappears below, the scenery changes dramatically. On clear days, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Kibo Peak, the highest of Kilimanjaro’s three volcanic cones, as well as the vast plains stretching far below. The open landscapes and changing vegetation make today one of the most scenic transitions on the Northern Circuit Route.
This section of the trek is also important for acclimatization, as you gain significant altitude while maintaining a comfortable pace. Your guides will encourage you to walk slowly and enjoy the scenery as your body gradually adjusts to the thinner air.
After approximately 5 to 6 hours of trekking, you will arrive at Shira 1 Camp, located on the western edge of the famous Shira Plateau, one of the oldest volcanic areas on Mount Kilimanjaro. From camp, you can enjoy magnificent views of the surrounding landscapes and experience your first night above the cloud line.
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
Elevation: 2,750 m – 3,505 m
Habitat: Heather and Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp
Today’s Highlights
- Leave the rainforest and enter the heather and moorland zone.
- Enjoy your first clear views of Kibo Peak.
- Experience the dramatic change in landscapes and vegetation.
- Trek across the beautiful western slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.
- Reach the scenic Shira Plateau and spend the night above the clouds.
- Continue acclimatizing as you gain higher elevation.
Day 4: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
Today is a relatively short trekking day, giving your body valuable time to acclimatize while exploring the spectacular Shira Plateau, one of the most unique landscapes on Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you will leave Shira 1 Camp and continue east across the plateau toward Shira 2 Camp.
The trail offers wide-open views and a completely different environment from the rainforest below. As you hike through the moorland zone, giant groundsels and volcanic rock formations dominate the landscape, while the summit of Kibo Peak becomes increasingly impressive.
Because today’s trek is shorter and the altitude gain is gradual, it serves as an important acclimatization day before climbing higher in the coming days. Many climbers begin to appreciate the slower pace of the Northern Circuit Route, allowing more time to enjoy the scenery and adapt comfortably to the mountain environment.
After approximately 3 to 4 hours of hiking, you will arrive at Shira 2 Camp, located on the eastern side of the plateau. From camp, you can enjoy magnificent views of Kibo Peak, Mount Meru, and the endless plains stretching below. The afternoon provides an excellent opportunity to rest, hydrate, and prepare for the higher elevations ahead.
Distance: Approximately 7 km
Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
Elevation: 3,505 m – 3,850 m
Habitat: Heather and Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp
Today’s Highlights
- Trek across the beautiful Shira Plateau.
- Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak and Mount Meru.
- Experience one of Kilimanjaro’s most unique volcanic landscapes.
- Benefit from an important acclimatization day.
- Spend the afternoon relaxing and preparing for higher elevations.
Day 5: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Moir Hut
Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the 9-Day Northern Circuit Route. After breakfast, you will leave Shira 2 Camp and gradually ascend across the alpine desert toward the famous Lava Tower, a spectacular volcanic rock formation rising to approximately 4,630 metres.
As you climb higher, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and dramatic. Vegetation becomes sparse, and the views of Kibo Peak, distant glaciers, and the surrounding valleys become even more impressive. Reaching Lava Tower gives your body valuable time to adjust to the thinner air, making this an essential day for improving your chances of a successful summit.
After lunch near Lava Tower, you will leave the main Machame trail and head toward the quieter northern slopes of the mountain. The route gradually descends to Moir Hut, a remote and peaceful camp rarely visited by large numbers of climbers.
Surrounded by volcanic ridges and stunning mountain scenery, Moir Hut offers one of the most unique camping experiences on Kilimanjaro. The extra time spent at this elevation also provides excellent acclimatization before continuing around the northern circuit.
Distance: Approximately 14 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours
Elevation: 3,850 m – 4,630 m – 4,200 m
Habitat: Moorland and Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Moir Hut
Today’s Highlights
- Reach the famous Lava Tower at 4,630 metres.
- Follow the important “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization principle.
- Leave the busier southern routes and enter Kilimanjaro’s remote northern slopes.
- Enjoy spectacular views of Kibo Peak and the surrounding volcanic landscapes.
- Experience one of the mountain’s most peaceful and scenic camps at Moir Hut.
- Continue building acclimatization for the summit ahead.
Day 6: Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp
Today, you’ll leave Moir Hut and continue around the remote northern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, one of the least visited and most beautiful sections of the mountain. Unlike the busier southern routes, this part of the Northern Circuit offers a true wilderness experience with fewer climbers and spectacular panoramic views.
The trail gradually climbs over rocky ridges before descending toward Buffalo Camp. Along the way, you’ll enjoy breathtaking views of the vast Kenyan plains to the north and the rugged landscapes surrounding Kibo Peak. The open scenery and peaceful atmosphere make this one of the most unique trekking days on Mount Kilimanjaro.
As you trek across the northern slopes, you’ll have plenty of time to appreciate the mountain’s remote beauty while continuing to acclimatize at high altitude. The gradual pace and relatively moderate elevation changes help prepare your body for the summit days ahead.
After approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Buffalo Camp, a remote campsite situated on the northern side of the mountain. From camp, you can enjoy stunning sunset views over Kenya and experience one of the quietest nights on Kilimanjaro.
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 4,200 m – 4,020 m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Buffalo Camp
Today’s Highlights

- Enjoy spectacular views of the Kenyan plains.
- Experience one of the quietest sections of the mountain.
- Continue acclimatizing while following a gradual route.
- Spend the night at the scenic and remote Buffalo Camp.

The trail gently traverses the northern slopes of the mountain, offering magnificent views of Kibo Peak, rugged volcanic landscapes, and the vast plains of Kenya stretching into the distance. Unlike the busier southern routes, today’s trek allows you to fully appreciate the mountain’s wilderness and enjoy the sense of isolation that makes the Northern Circuit so special.
The route involves gradual ascents and descents, providing another excellent acclimatization day before your final approach to the summit. Your guides will maintain a slow and steady pace, allowing your body to continue adapting to the altitude while preserving energy for the days ahead.
After approximately 4 to 5 hours of hiking, you’ll arrive at Third Cave Camp, a quiet campsite located beneath the northern slopes of Kibo. The afternoon is usually spent resting, hydrating, and preparing for tomorrow’s trek to School Hut, the final camp before your summit attempt.

- Benefit from another important acclimatization day.

Today, you’ll trek from Third Cave Camp to School Hut, the final camp before your summit attempt on Mount Kilimanjaro. After breakfast, you’ll begin a steady climb through the dry and rocky alpine desert toward the eastern side of Kibo.
As you gain altitude, the landscape becomes more open and vegetation almost disappears. Meanwhile, your guide will maintain a slow pace to help you conserve energy for summit night. The higher elevation makes this section more demanding, so steady walking and careful pacing remain important.
After reaching School Hut, you’ll enjoy an early meal and prepare your summit equipment. Your guide will explain the summit plan and help you organize your warm clothing, headlamp, and essential gear. Afterwards, you’ll rest for a few hours before beginning the climb toward Uhuru Peak around midnight.

Your guide will maintain a slow and steady pace as you climb through the cold, high-altitude summit zone. After reaching the crater rim, you’ll continue toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Here, you’ll celebrate your achievement and take memorable summit photos before beginning the long descent.
