Overview

The Lemosho Route 7 Days is one of the most scenic and well-balanced ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa at 5,895 meters. It starts from the western side of the mountain. It then passes through remote wilderness areas before joining the main trail near the Shira Plateau. Because of its quiet start and natural beauty, many trekkers consider it one of the best Kilimanjaro routes for scenery and success.

The Lemosho Route takes climbers through several ecological zones step by step. It begins in lush rainforest. It then continues into moorland, followed by alpine desert, and finally reaches the icy summit zone at Uhuru Peak. The 7-day version gives a balanced pace. It allows better adjustment to altitude while still keeping the journey efficient.

Many people choose this route because it offers great scenery and fewer crowds at the start. It also provides strong acclimatization opportunities. The extra time on the mountain helps the body adjust to altitude changes. This improves comfort and increases summit success chances. In addition, trekkers enjoy wide landscapes, volcanic formations, and clear mountain views throughout the climb.

In terms of difficulty, the Lemosho 7-day route is moderate to challenging. It does not require technical climbing skills. However, climbers need good fitness and mental strength. This is especially important during summit night when conditions become very cold and demanding.

The success rate is high when trekkers follow a steady pace with proper guide support. This route is best for fit beginners, experienced hikers, and travelers who want a scenic, less crowded, and high-success Kilimanjaro experience with strong acclimatization and beautiful landscapes.

Why Choose the 7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Hiking Tour Package

The 7-Day Lemosho Route is one of the best choices for climbing Mount Kilimanjaro because it combines beautiful scenery, fewer crowds, and a high chance of reaching the summit. It starts on the western side of the mountain, where trekkers enjoy a quiet and remote environment before joining the main trail later in the journey. This makes the experience more peaceful compared to busier routes.

One of the main reasons to choose this route is its excellent acclimatization profile. The 7-day itinerary gives your body more time to adjust to altitude changes, which improves comfort and reduces the risk of altitude sickness. As a result, it increases the overall success rate for reaching Uhuru Peak.

Another advantage is the scenery. The route passes through diverse ecological zones, including rainforest, moorland, alpine desert, and the arctic summit zone. Each stage offers unique landscapes, from green forests full of wildlife to wide volcanic plains and glacier views near the summit.

In terms of difficulty, the Lemosho Route is moderate to challenging. It does not require technical climbing skills, but it does require good fitness, endurance, and mental determination, especially during summit night.

The success rate is high when climbers follow a steady pace and use proper guide support. The longer duration helps improve adaptation to altitude, making the climb safer and more enjoyable.

This route is best suited for beginners with good fitness, experienced hikers, and travelers who want a scenic, less crowded, and highly successful Kilimanjaro adventure.

Day 2 Londorossi Gate (2100m) – Mti Mkubwa camp (2750m)

Today your Kilimanjaro trekking adventure officially begins at Londorossi Gate. After registration and final checks, you enter the lush rainforest zone of the Lemosho Route. The trail is peaceful and less crowded, allowing you to enjoy a true wilderness experience from the very first steps.

As you hike through the dense forest, you may see incredible wildlife such as black-and-white colobus monkeys jumping through the trees, blue monkeys along the trail, and a variety of colorful bird species. The forest is also rich in tall trees, ferns, and thick vegetation, creating a cool and humid environment that feels completely different from the lowlands.

The trail climbs gradually, giving your body time to adjust to altitude. Although some sections can be muddy, the pace remains steady and comfortable under the guidance of your mountain team. After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Mti Mkubwa Camp, surrounded by forest and natural sounds of the mountain.

Distance: 6-8 km
Hiking time: 3-5 hours
Elevation: 2,100m – 2,780m
Habitat: Rainforest
Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp

Note:

Today is your first trekking day, so walking slowly is very important for proper acclimatization. In addition, the rainforest can be slippery, especially after rain, so proper hiking boots and careful steps are essential. Stay hydrated and enjoy the wildlife experience, as this is one of the most beautiful sections of Kilimanjaro.

Day 3 Mti Mkubwa Camp (2750m) – Shira 2 Camp (3840m)

Today you leave the rainforest behind and continue your climb into the open moorland zone of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail gradually changes from dense forest to wider landscapes filled with heather, volcanic rocks, and sweeping views of the mountain. As you gain elevation, the air becomes cooler and thinner, so walking at a steady and controlled pace is very important.

Along the way, you enjoy your first wide panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s higher slopes and the surrounding plains. On clear days, the Shira Plateau appears in the distance, giving a strong sense of the mountain’s vast size and beauty. The environment is quiet, open, and much drier compared to the previous day, creating a completely new trekking experience.

After several hours of hiking, you arrive at Shira 2 Camp, located on the scenic Shira Plateau. This camp offers wide views of the mountain and a peaceful atmosphere for rest and acclimatization.

Distance: 10-12 km
Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Elevation: 2,780m – 3,850m
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Shira 2 Camp

Note:

Today’s altitude gain is significant, so a slow pace is essential to avoid fatigue. In addition, drink enough water throughout the hike and take short breaks when needed. The weather becomes colder and windier at higher elevation, so warm layers should be kept easily accessible during the trek and at camp.

Day 4 Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today you continue your Lemosho Route journey from Shira 2 Camp toward Barranco Camp, crossing one of the most important acclimatization sections on Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail first ascends gradually into a more rugged alpine desert landscape as you approach Lava Tower. The environment becomes drier and more dramatic, with volcanic rock formations and wide mountain views.

At Lava Tower, you stop for lunch and acclimatization. This section is very important because your body experiences higher altitude before you descend again. This “climb high, sleep low” strategy helps improve adaptation to altitude and increases summit success chances.

After Lava Tower, you descend into the beautiful Barranco Valley. The landscape changes again into a greener and more sheltered environment surrounded by giant senecio plants and steep cliffs. The contrast between high rocky terrain and the lush valley makes this day one of the most scenic on the route.

You arrive at Barranco Camp in the afternoon for rest and overnight stay.

Distance: 10-12 km
Hiking time: 6-8 hours
Elevation: 3,850m – 4,630m – 3,960m
Habitat: Moorland – Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Barranco Camp

Note:

Today may feel physically demanding due to altitude changes, so walking slowly and staying hydrated is very important. In addition, some trekkers may feel mild altitude symptoms at Lava Tower, which is normal. However, always inform your guide if symptoms become severe. Rest well at Barranco Camp to prepare for the next stage of the climb.

Day 5 Barranco Camp (3950m) – Karanga Camp (3950m)

Today you continue your Lemosho Route journey from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp through some of the most scenic sections of Mount Kilimanjaro. The day begins with the famous Barranco Wall climb, a steep but non-technical section that requires careful steps and steady movement. As you ascend, you enjoy incredible views of the valley below and Kibo Peak in the distance.

After reaching the top of the wall, the trail becomes more gentle and continues through ridges and valleys with changing alpine desert landscapes. The environment is dry, open, and filled with volcanic formations, offering a true high-mountain trekking experience.

Although the distance is relatively short, the altitude makes the hike more demanding. Therefore, trekkers move slowly and focus on conserving energy for the upcoming summit days. You arrive at Karanga Camp in the afternoon, where you rest and prepare for higher elevation ahead.

Distance: 5-7 km
Hiking time: 4-5 hours
Elevation: 3,960m – 4,035m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Karanga Camp

Note:

Today’s climb includes steep sections, so take your time on the Barranco Wall and follow your guide’s instructions carefully. In addition, maintain a steady pace to support acclimatization and avoid unnecessary fatigue. Drink enough water and rest well at Karanga Camp to prepare your body for the final push toward Barafu Camp and the summit attempt.

Day 6 Karanga Camp (3959m) – Barafu Hut (4600)

Today you continue your climb from Karanga Camp toward Barafu Camp, the final high camp before the summit attempt. The trail moves steadily uphill through a dry alpine desert landscape with rocky ground, minimal vegetation, and wide open views of Kibo Peak. As you gain altitude, the air becomes thinner and colder, so a slow and steady pace is very important.

The hike is not very long, but it feels demanding because of the elevation. Therefore, trekkers focus on conserving energy and staying well-hydrated throughout the journey. Along the way, you may feel the anticipation building as Barafu Camp marks the starting point for the midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak.

Upon arrival at Barafu Camp, you rest early, eat dinner, and prepare your gear for the most challenging part of the climb.

Distance: 4-6 km
Hiking time: 3-5 hours
Elevation: 4,035m – 4,640m
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Barafu Camp

Note:

Today is all about preparation for summit night, so rest as much as possible once you reach camp. In addition, organize all your warm clothing, headlamp, and water before sleeping to ensure a smooth midnight departure. Avoid unnecessary movement and focus on conserving energy for the summit attempt ahead.

Day 7 Summit attempt Barafu Camp (4600m) – Uhuru Peak (5895m) – Mweka (3100m)

Today is the most challenging and rewarding day of your Lemosho 7 Days climb. The summit attempt begins around midnight from Kibo Hut. You ascend slowly in darkness under cold and windy conditions toward Gilman’s Point on the crater rim. From there, you continue along the ridge to reach Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters.

Reaching the summit is an unforgettable moment. You enjoy sunrise views over glaciers, volcanic craters, and the vast African landscape. After celebrating briefly and taking photos, you begin a long descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest before continuing down to Horombo Hut.

The descent is long but easier as oxygen levels increase. You arrive at Horombo Hut in the afternoon for dinner and overnight recovery after a demanding summit day.

Distance: 21-24 km
Hiking time: 10-14 hours
Elevation: 4,703m – 5,895m – 3,720m
Habitat: Arctic Zone – Alpine Desert – Moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut

Note:

This is the toughest part of the entire expedition, both physically and mentally. Move slowly, conserve energy, and follow your guide’s instructions at all times. In addition, dress in very warm layers because summit temperatures can drop far below freezing. Stay focused, hydrated, and steady to successfully reach Uhuru Peak and complete your Kilimanjaro journey.

Day 8 Mweka camp (3100m) – Mweka Gate (1980m)

Today you complete your Kilimanjaro adventure with a final descent from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate. The trail leads you through the lush rainforest once again, where tall trees, fresh air, and rich vegetation create a peaceful environment for your last steps on the mountain. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and thicker, showing how much altitude you have lost since the summit.

The path can be slippery in some sections, so careful walking is important, especially after days of trekking fatigue. Your guide will maintain a steady pace to ensure safety while you enjoy the final moments of the journey.

Upon arrival at Mweka Gate, you complete park formalities and receive your official summit certificate, marking the successful end of your climb. From here, you are transferred back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha for rest and celebration.

Distance: 10-12 km
Hiking time: 3-5 hours
Elevation: 3,100m – 1,640m
Habitat: Rainforest
Ending point: Mweka Gate -Arusha Hotel/Mountain Meru

Note:

The descent may feel tiring on your legs, so take it slowly and use trekking poles if available. In addition, stay hydrated and be careful on wet or muddy sections of the rainforest trail. Finally, take time to celebrate your achievement of reaching the Roof of Africa and completing the Lemosho Route successfully.
